As a long-standing specialist in bike tours in France, Grand Angle offers an itinerary through Southern Burgundy designed for discovery and pleasure. This self-guided cycling tour allows you to pedal at your own pace through a landscape rich in history, vineyards, and waterways, staying in comfortable hotels each night.
The journey begins on one of France's pioneering "Voies Vertes" (Greenways), an old railway line converted into a superb cycle path. From Chalon-sur-Saône, the route winds through the Côte Chalonnaise vineyards, passing charming villages and notable sites like the Château de Cormatin. The path leads you to the historic town of Cluny, renowned for its Benedictine abbey, a masterpiece of Romanesque art.
From Cluny, your ride continues towards Mâcon before joining the "Voie Bleue" path, which follows the majestic Saône river valley. This tranquil riverside route takes you to Tournus, where you can admire the Abbey of St. Philibert, another treasure of Romanesque architecture. With the majority of the trip on dedicated greenways and quiet roads, it offers a serene and accessible cycling experience.
This self guided tour in Europe offers a perfect balance of gentle cycling, cultural exploration, and the authentic charm of Burgundy's landscapes and villages. It's an opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the most beautiful regions of France adventure tours, combining nature with a rich historical heritage.

4* hotel in Chalon-sur-Saône
The cycling path (‘Voie Verte’) starts in the city and goes to the north-west towards Givry. It continues its journey toward the southwest, leading you to the enchanting, fortified town of Buxy, nestled amidst the picturesque vineyards of Cote Chalonnaise in the Burgundy region, encompassing renowned appellations like Mercurey and Givry. As you traverse this celebrated vineyard landscape, your path will lead you through the historic towns of St. Boll and St. Gengoux le National, characterized by their medieval charm. Your next destination is in Cormatin, where you'll discover a magnificent 17th-century castle, an intricate maze, and a charming ancient vegetable garden. The ‘Voie Verte’ will lead you to Taizé (a monastic community) and, 13km/8.1mi further, to the beautiful Benedictine abbey of Cluny, founded in 910. By 1080, it was considered the most important monastic complex of Christianity.
3* hotel in Cluny
52km/32.3mi by bike
If you haven’t visited Cluny, take some time to do so before you leave on today’s shorter ride. Following your visit to Cluny, you'll transition from the spiritual realm to immerse yourself in the poetic romanticism of Alphonse de Lamartine. His formative years spent amidst this captivating landscape, with its harmonious blend of nature, castles, and monuments, undoubtedly left an imprint on his literary works. Along the way you’ll cross the longest cycling tunnel in Europe, lit and secured over 1.6km/1mi, which leads to the castle of Berzé le Chatel. A climb here rewards the rider with a wonderful view over the Mâconnais vineyard district.
3* hotel in Mâcon
28km/17.4mi by bike
You will leave Mâcon via the ‘Voie Bleue’ path. It follows the Saône river to Fleurville and the historic castles of Marigny and Marfontaine. Paths and small roads will lead you to the beautiful Romanesque Abbey of Tournus and a splendid old town with its unique streets and traboules (hidden passages that cross buildings and connect streets to each other). Make sure to stop by the abbey of St Philibert, built in the 11th century and truly a Romanesque architectural masterpiece.
4* hotel in Tournus
40km/24.9mi by bike
You will cycle along the Saône river, before moving away from the calm flowing waters to pass through Gigny. You’ll ride through the flood plain between the Saône and Grosne once out of this town. Further along the ride, you’ll come by St Loup de Varennes, where Joseph Nicéphore Niepce, the inventor of photography, lived. Then, there is St Rémy, where you’ll get back to the banks of the Saône until reaching Chalon-sur-Saône.
4* hotel in Chalon-sur-Saône
30km/18.6mi by bike
End of the tour after breakfast and checking out of the hotel.
Occasionally, adjustments to the planned itinerary may be necessary. This could stem from trip logistics (such as fully booked accommodations, trail closures, or adverse weather conditions, etc.). It's important to understand that these modifications are always implemented with your best interests in mind, prioritizing your safety and comfort.
Difficulty level 2/5, easy to moderate cycling. Mostly following walking/cycling paths on an old railway from Chalon-sur-Saône to Mâcon, following the rolling hills of the Côte Chalonnaise; on the ‘Voie Bleue’ stages, you will often be on a shared-use lane on quiet small roads.
28 to 52km/17.4 to 32.3mi daily stages with easy to moderate ascents in elevation throughout the rides. It is appropriate for children from age 13 and up, potentially younger if they have prior experience on similar cycling itineraries.
Clients only carry the essential things for the day (lunch/picnic, water & personal belongings) in a saddlebag/backpack. The rest of your travel luggage will be transported for you from hotel to hotel each day. Your luggage will arrive at the hotel in the evening. We ask you to limit your luggage to a maximum of 20kg/44lbs per person. Only one piece of luggage per person allowed.

This doesn’t mean that they are of a lesser quality, in fact far from it. If we indicate that an accommodation is ‘3-star or equivalent to’ this means that the establishment may have chosen not to receive an official classification, but we believe the level of comfort provided is equal to that of a traditional 3-star establishment.

It is the client’s responsibility to arrive prepared with the items listed below to help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
The following items are required for this trip unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed.
Casual Clothing & Footwear – comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.
Important Note: Please, no cotton hiking/cycling clothes. Synthetic clothing is very efficient in drying quickly. Merino wool material clothing is also efficient in drying quickly, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing a bad odor after use.
After years of experience planning adventure travel around the world, we've learned that anything can happen, and every traveler should carry a basic personal first aid kit. We want to ensure our guests are well-prepared and make smart informed travel decisions. In many of the places we operate trips, it may be challenging to find certain medications and/or first aid supplies, and sometimes common items you desire may not be available in the destination you are travelling. That's why it's good to be prepared and carry a small supply of first aid supplies, any prescription medication, and/or over-the-counter medications you may require during your travels.
We recommend discussing your travel plans, vaccination requirements, and any medication usage with your primary healthcare provider before embarking on our trips. This helps ensure you have a safe and enjoyable travel experience.
Here is a basic list of what we think makes a good personal travel first aid kit:
It is recommended that you prepare your items in the following manner for your travels to this trip.
Important Note: Again, it is recommended to either wear or pack in your “Carry-on Bag” the main gear items you need for this trip vs. putting them in your checked “Travel Bag” (in case luggage is delayed). Lost or delayed luggage has become more and more common in major airports for international travel since the global pandemic.
During this trip, the packing system needs to be in 2 bags.
Extra Luggage - “Checked Bag(s)” & ”Carry-on Bag(s)”: This bag will contain all the items you want to bring along on the trip. It will be transferred by vehicle to your lodging, and you will have access to it at the end of each day of activity at hotels, but not throughout the day. Extra luggage is not allowed on this trip beyond the 1 bag requirement. Maximum 20kg/45lbs.
Extra luggage, not needed during your trip can be safely stored at your start/ending accommodations.
Saddlebags/bike bag (not provided unless adding bike rental): All guests will need a bike saddle bag, which they will be responsible for carrying during trip activities. Items in this bag should include anything you may need throughout the day during the trip. (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.)
To Transport Your Belongings (while cycling):
If you don’t have a saddlebag & rack on your bike, bring a 30-40L backpack with a waist strap to carry what you need for the day (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.) as you cycle. If you have a rack on your bike, you can attach your bag with the help of bungee ropes or paracord. Rented bikes are equipped with a saddlebag where you can store your belongings. You should still bring a small backpack with you, so that you can easily take your belongings with you when you are visiting attractions along the route.

A team that thinks of everything and puts you at ease.
A very attractive and easy tour combining culture, nature and gastronomy
A great success! Very few minor inconveniences.
Very satisfied, it's a very beautiful region, very varied, but I think that in the holiday period this route and the towns we visit must be less pleasant to do.
