Place de Jaude and the Statue of Vercingetorix - Clermont-Ferrand - France

Visiting Clermont-Ferrand in 2 days gives you time to explore an Auvergne city where volcanic stone lines the streets. The cathedral rises above the old town’s lanes. Below it, the terraces of Place de Jaude and the paths of Jardin Lecoq invite you to slow down. Leave yourself time. On day 2, choose Montferrand or the Puy de Dôme, according to your interests and the weather. These pointers will help you plan your weekend without spending it in transit. This city break can also precede our hiking trips in Auvergne. Since 1983, Grand Angle has organized walking and cycling trips at a range of paces.

6 stops to discover Clermont-Ferrand

  1. The cathedral and the old town’s lanes
  2. The Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port
  3. Place de Jaude and Jardin Lecoq
  4. Montferrand and L’Aventure Michelin
  5. The Puy de Dôme, for an excursion beyond the city
  6. Choosing a central place to stay

There is no need to rush through every stop. For a 2-day visit, spend the first day in central Clermont and choose 1 main outing for the next day. You can then explore the volcanoes at a pace that suits your walking experience.

The historic center stands on Clermont’s hill. Its pedestrian streets connect shops and small squares, with the cathedral as a landmark. For a first look, head along Rue des Gras to Place de la Victoire. You will feel the slope, so wear comfortable shoes and allow for an uphill walk.

Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral owes its dark color to Volvic stone. Look at the facade from the square, then step back into the neighboring streets for another view. Inside, the height of the nave and the light through the stained glass give a different sense of the building. Plan your visit around services and the areas open to the public.

Allow for the Bayette tower to be closed: the cathedral association lists access as closed. To plan a guided tour, consult its visitor information, in French. Check what is available before building your day around a view from a tower.

Around Place de la Victoire, leave room for a detour. A fountain or a facade can be reason enough to stop, without adding another monument to your list. The Maison du Tourisme, on this square, has resources for exploring the center. You can also plan your walk with the tourist office’s guide to Clermont.

Notre-Dame-du-Port: take time to look

From the cathedral district, continue toward Rue du Port. The Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port reveals another side of Clermont’s architecture, with Romanesque forms on a more compact scale. It is a separate building from the Gothic cathedral. Both deserve a visit, even if you only have 1 day.

Built in the 12th century, the basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. The designation covers the monument within that group of heritage sites. It does not extend to the whole city of Clermont-Ferrand.

Take time to look at the capitals and the arrangement of the interior, then walk around the church to see the apse. A short pause in this neighborhood lets you explore a little longer before returning to Place de Jaude. If you enjoy architecture, allow more time inside than you would for a quick photo stop.

The official Notre-Dame-du-Port visitor page brings together practical information. Check access arrangements if you need an accessible entrance. When visiting religious buildings, fit sightseeing around worship and celebrations.

Place de Jaude and Jardin Lecoq: take a break in town

Place de Jaude opens into a broad square below the old town. It is a useful place to get your bearings after exploring the lanes. The equestrian statue of Vercingétorix, by Bartholdi, stands along one of its views. Around the square, the opera house and shopfronts also tell the story of the city that grew beyond the hill.

Make Jaude a break in your itinerary. A coffee or lunch gives you time to decide what comes next without rushing. The tourist office’s introduction to the square helps you identify its main buildings. The tram also makes it easier to reach other neighborhoods.

South of the center, Jardin Lecoq has around 5 hectares of paths, lawns and trees around a pond. It is a place for a quieter moment between 2 visits. For families, alternating time outdoors with monuments can make the day more enjoyable than a succession of indoor visits.

Leave time to eat and sit down. A day of sightseeing is still a day of walking, even without a hiking trail. The garden’s opening hours vary with the season. Check the city’s Jardin Lecoq page, in French, if you plan to finish your walk there.

Montferrand and L’Aventure Michelin: a second day in the city

Montferrand has its own old town, separate from the one around the cathedral. This neighborhood is northeast of Clermont. Plan a separate outing there rather than treating it as a detour between Jaude and Notre-Dame-du-Port.

In the old streets, look at the facades and half-timbered houses, particularly along Rue de la Rodade. This walk is about observing the neighborhood. Private courtyards and buildings are not all open to visitors. Enjoy the views from public spaces, without assuming that every doorway is a visitor entrance.

You can combine this walk with L’Aventure Michelin, a museum about the company’s history and changes in mobility. The exhibition covers tires and technical innovations, with a place for the brand’s graphic design. It is an option for understanding another part of Clermont’s identity.

The museum recommends 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours for a visit. Add travel time and a break when planning your half-day. Consult the official L’Aventure Michelin website for opening days and bookings. This program can fill most of a relaxed second day, without adding an excursion to the Puy de Dôme summit.

The Puy de Dôme: plan a separate excursion

If seeing the volcanoes is your priority, set aside half a day for the Puy de Dôme. The summit is outside Clermont-Ferrand. Getting there needs different planning from a walk around the center.

The cog railway, the Panoramique des Dômes, reaches the summit in around 15 minutes from its departure station. This does not include travel from Clermont, waiting time, your visit or the return journey. Allow a full half-day in your itinerary and plan around the available connections.

The train station is in Orcines, at the foot of the volcano. If using public transport, check the official directions to the Puy de Dôme, in French. You may need a connection from your starting point in the city. Check the return journey before booking your ascent. The city tram does not take you directly to the cog railway’s departure station.

At the summit, wind and visibility can affect how much you enjoy the excursion. Bring a warm layer and rain protection, even after a mild morning in Clermont. Closed-toe shoes are preferable for walking outside. In cloudy weather, a museum visit may suit your day better than a viewpoint with no view.

The Panoramique des Dômes timetables, in French, depend on the season and operating periods. Check them before setting out. This suggestion uses the train to reach the top. Walking up is a hike to plan separately, according to your fitness and the conditions.

A 2-day itinerary

The table below gives 1 possible plan. The half-days are time allowances for exploring at your own pace, with no fixed appointments. Adjust the order to your arrival time and the attractions' opening hours.

WhenA weekend in the cityA weekend with the volcanoes
Day 1, morningThe cathedral and old townThe cathedral and old town
Day 1, afternoonNotre-Dame-du-Port, then Jaude; Jardin Lecoq if you wishNotre-Dame-du-Port and Jaude, with a break rather than an extra visit
Day 2Montferrand and L’Aventure Michelin, depending on opening hoursHalf a day at the Puy de Dôme, then free time in the city or your journey home

If you only have 1 day, focus on the old town and Notre-Dame-du-Port. Stop at Jaude for lunch, then choose between an indoor visit and Jardin Lecoq. Save Montferrand or the Puy de Dôme for another time to avoid spending this first visit traveling between sights.

To continue on foot, plan separate walking days in the Massif Central. A city break and a mountain hike call for different equipment and effort. Our guided hike through the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, described in French lets you plan the next part of your stay around a walking itinerary. Read the trip description for its stages and difficulty level.

Where to stay when visiting Clermont-Ferrand

For 2 days, staying near the center lets you return to drop off a bag or walk out to dinner. The areas around Place de Jaude and Place Delille give you 2 starting points to compare. If arriving by train, also check the route from the station to your accommodation, especially with luggage.

The Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte, at 16 Place Delille, is an option for staying near the Port district. This 4-star hotel is dedicated to the writer Alexandre Vialatte. Its library and literary references give you another way to discover the city. Its elevated terrace has views over Clermont and the surrounding hills.

Consult the Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte website to choose a room and check the services available. If the view or terrace access matters to you, confirm the conditions and the corresponding room category with the hotel.

If arriving by car, check parking options before you travel. In the old town, pedestrian streets and slopes can complicate an unplanned arrival with suitcases. If you have reduced mobility, explain your needs to the accommodation and plan access to the monuments in advance.

Getting to and around Clermont-Ferrand

The SNCF railway station lets you arrive in the city without a car. Plan your route to your accommodation before leaving, then walk between the sights in the center. For Montferrand or a museum farther away, consult the T2C network’s timetables and maps, in French. Check the stop for your destination rather than choosing only by neighborhood name.

For the Puy de Dôme, read the directions to the cog railway separately. City bus and Panoramique timetables do not automatically provide a connection. With children or a train to catch at the end of the day, allow extra time for the return journey.

Before finalizing your plans, check 3 things: opening hours for your chosen visits, the weather for your excursion and your route back. You can then leave the remaining time for breaks and discoveries along the way.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Clermont-Ferrand

Can you visit Clermont-Ferrand in 1 day?

Yes, for a first look at the old town. The cathedral, Notre-Dame-du-Port and Place de Jaude make a manageable itinerary, with a lunch break. A second day gives you time to add Montferrand or an excursion to the Puy de Dôme without squeezing every visit together.

Can you plan this weekend without a car?

Yes, for central Clermont and the neighborhoods served by the T2C network. An excursion to the Puy de Dôme needs extra preparation. Check connections to the Panoramique station and their return timetables. Their availability depends on the day and season.

What can you do in Clermont-Ferrand when it rains?

Choose indoor attractions that are open, such as L’Aventure Michelin, and visit monuments between showers. Keep an excursion to the Puy de Dôme in your plans only if conditions allow you to enjoy it. A summit in the clouds does not guarantee a view of the volcanoes.

Are the cathedral and Notre-Dame-du-Port the same building?

No. Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral stands above Clermont’s hill, with Gothic architecture in volcanic stone. Notre-Dame-du-Port is a Romanesque basilica in the Port district. It is UNESCO-listed as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
