Serre Chevalier in summer | Blog Grand Angle Tours

Serre Chevalier brings together Briançon and the villages of the Guisane valley in the Hautes-Alpes region of France. In summer, trails cross larch woods along the edge of Écrins National Park. Monêtier’s baths and Briançon’s heritage complement days outdoors. Keep a single base for your weekend. Choose a hike, an activity with an instructor or a cultural visit according to the weather. Grand Angle organizes holidays in the Southern French Alps. To decide what to do in Serre Chevalier in summer, compare your available time with the effort each outing requires.

What to do in Serre Chevalier in summer: 3 types of activity

  1. Outdoor sports: hiking, rafting, mountain biking, via ferrata, paragliding
  2. Relaxation and leisure: baths, swimming, panoramic lift rides
  3. Culture and discovery: Briançon, Le Monêtier

For several days of walking in the Briançonnais and neighboring ranges, our Southern Alps holidays cover Queyras and the Clarée valley.

Outdoor sports

Walking around Le Casset

Le Casset is a hamlet of Le Monêtier-les-Bains, upstream from the main village. Houses clustered beside the Guisane and the bell tower of Saint-Claude church introduce the upper valley. Take time to look at the old doors before setting out. Exploring the village is already an outing. You do not need to reach a lake to enjoy the landscape.

The Écrins National Park visitor center at the hamlet entrance opens during summer. It provides information on trail conditions and activities offered by the park. It is a useful first stop, particularly after rain or early in the season.

The return walk from Le Casset to Le Lauzet follows the Guisane. Allow 8.5 km, 182 m of ascent and 3 hours' walking, at easy difficulty. Returning by the same path lets you turn back earlier at any point. The Guisane riverbanks are not designated swimming areas.

Lac de la Douche: a mountain hike

For walkers who want to spend half a day in the mountains, Lac de la Douche is an option from Le Casset. Allow 8.2 km return, around 413 m of ascent and 2 hours 30 minutes of walking. Add your stops to this indicative time. The climb passes through a larch forest before reaching the lake.

The route is easy, with stony slopes and a narrow section approaching the lake. Wear suitable shoes. This is a mountain path that requires walking experience. With a young child, the journey can take much longer.

Snow and winter damage can alter trail access. Ask at the Le Casset center about current conditions. Continuing beyond the lake towards mountain passes changes the demands of the day. Our article on packing a hiking backpack helps you check your equipment before setting out.

Rafting, mountain biking, via ferrata and paragliding

For a more active outing, the Guisane has rafting trips led by professionals. Explain your experience and the participants' ages. The route also depends on river flow. Conditions for children and swimming requirements vary with the chosen activity.

A guided mountain-bike ride and a bike-park descent require different skills. For a first attempt, an introductory session with a professional helps you discover a bike and terrain suited to your level.

Via ferrata and paragliding are also available in the valley. Beginners should use a professional for these technical activities. Booking just one activity leaves time to enjoy the villages too.

Relaxation and leisure

Les Grands Bains du Monêtier

Les Grands Bains du Monêtier uses naturally warm water and has indoor and outdoor pools. It suits a pause after walking or half a day devoted to rest. Choose your time slot before planning the rest of the day. Online booking guarantees entry, while walk-in access depends on available places.

Look carefully at the area you are booking. Espace Grands Bains and Spa La Rotonde are different offers. The latter is for visitors aged 16 and over. When visiting with children, check age rules and permitted time slots. The establishment requires swimwear that meets its regulations.

Changing and showering time is included in the admission duration. Leave a margin between finishing your walk and the start of your booking.

Baignade Bio de Chantemerle

For swimming in summer, Baignade Bio de Chantemerle is in Parc des Colombiers. Its calendar and rules differ from those of Les Grands Bains. It is an option for a hot day, with time to pause in the park.

A panoramic lift ride

A lift lets you enjoy a high-altitude view while leaving time for another activity. Summer access is offered from several areas, including Chantemerle and Le Monêtier-les-Bains.

Each area publishes its own summer opening calendar. Before buying a ticket, check which lifts admit pedestrians and the last descent time for your planned day.

Bring a warm layer even for a short visit.

Culture and discovery

Briançon, a Vauban fortified town

Briançon’s old town adds a cultural element to a weekend in the valley. Its fortifications form part of the UNESCO-listed works of Vauban. Explore the streets and views from the walls, then choose a guided visit to understand the surrounding forts. The Cité Vauban tour offered by the town’s heritage service lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.

The forts have their own visiting arrangements, separate from a self-guided walk through the town. Sloping streets and cobbles call for comfortable shoes.

Le Monêtier and its Museum of Sacred Art

In Le Monêtier, the Museum of Sacred Art in Saint-Pierre chapel displays works from the municipality’s religious buildings. Guided visits of Le Monêtier or Le Casset are other options to check in the tourist office program.

Plan 2 or 3 days around one base

The first day can combine exploring Le Monêtier or Le Casset with a bathing slot. Keep the longest walk for the best weather window. On the following day, choose a hike, a panoramic lift ride or an activity with an instructor. With a third day, add Briançon or a heritage visit near your base.

Keep the order flexible. If Saturday is the only fine day, use it for walking and save heritage visits for Sunday.

For accommodation in Le Monêtier, Le Flourou lodge is worth considering. The property offers rooms of several capacities and arrangements with or without meals. Its village location suits travelers who want to return to the same base each evening. It is in the Briançonnais, in the Southern French Alps.

Prepare your arrival and bookings

Briançon railway station makes arrival by train possible. Then check the connection to your chosen village and journeys needed for your outings. Key points are the last Sunday return and access to the trailhead, which may not be served by transport.

Lift and swimming openings cover a shorter period than the valley walking season. In June or September, prioritize a plan that also works without them. Baths and cultural visits have their own closure periods. Your budget mainly depends on the number of paid activities you choose, alongside nights and meals.

Keep an open museum or the baths as a fallback. A thunderstorm risk means reconsidering high-altitude outings, even if you set off in sunshine.

Another mountain range for a future holiday

A weekend helps you discover what you enjoy: setting out on foot in the morning, returning to a village and keeping time for a visit. For a longer holiday, a similar rhythm can be found in another range. Our article on the mountains of the Italian Alps helps you compare those landscapes with the Guisane valley.

The Dolomites offer other possibilities for several days of walking. Grand Angle organizes self-guided and guided holidays there, with several walking levels.

Questions about Serre Chevalier in summer

What can I do in Serre Chevalier in summer without a long hike?

Explore a village such as Le Monêtier or Le Casset, book a heritage visit or take a break at Les Grands Bains. During their summer opening dates, lifts also provide panoramic access for pedestrians.

Can families enjoy the valley?

Yes, by choosing outings suited to your children’s ages and experience. A village walk and a swim involve different demands from a hike to Lac de la Douche. Baths and activities with instructors have age conditions to check before booking.

What can I do if it rains?

The Museum of Sacred Art in Le Monêtier and Les Grands Bains offer a day under cover. In thunderstorms, avoid exposed activities.

Which base should I choose for a short stay?

Le Monêtier suits a weekend focused on the baths and upper valley. Briançon offers a more urban and heritage-focused stay, with a railway station. First compare the outings you want and how to reach them, then choose accommodation. Keeping the same base saves settling-in time.
