At the end of summer 2023, Nastasia and I travelled to Corfu for a few days. Having worked at the Grand Angle agency in the Vercors for 2 and 5 years respectively, we were able to visit our colleague Juliette. For the last 2 years, our Greek travel expert has spent 6 months of the year on the island of Corfu. This is where the offices of our subsidiary ‘Kélifos’ are based. From the small village of Liapades, she and Nicolas plan the most beautiful trips to the four corners of this beautiful country: Crete, the Cyclades, the Peloponnese, the Saronic Islands and of course... Corfu!
After working from the Corfu offices for a few days, we set off to explore the surrounding area on foot, spoilt by the magnificent weather (after a few days of rain - fortunately, while we were at the office... at least we understood why the island is so green!)
We put on our walking shoes, packed our bags (don't forget our swimming costumes!) and off we went! Departing from Lakones, a typical hilltop village, our destination is the beach of Agios Georgios. Our first steps quickly take us through a vast olive grove. The harvest generally starts in November/December (depending on the region and altitude). You can see the black nets on the ground that will receive the olives once they have reached maturity. In general, they are left all year round at the foot of the trees (or wrapped around them).
On our way out of the forest, Nicolas suggests a short trip to the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro..
This fortress stands atop a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. We climb to the top. From there, we can see Liapades and its bay. A short break later (with a history lesson from Nicolas) and off we go again. Back through the olive groves.
Then we come to a mule track. Juliette warned us that this was the most beautiful part of the walk! This path runs alongside the cliffs and offers a breathtaking view of the sea and the bay of Agios Georgios. The view is too good to miss, so we stop here for a picnic. On the menu: Greek salad, of course! Accompanied by local cheeses, pita bread, aubergine caviar, tzatzíki and fig tart. A real treat! !
The end of the walk is easy, downhill towards the sea. Then comes the reward: a refreshing swim with a view of tomorrow's destination: Porto Timoni.
This heavenly beach was our favourite of the trip! It has the unusual feature of being... double! That's right, two beaches on either side of a small peninsula. Don't be jealous, each has its own bay with crystal-clear waters. It's quite a popular spot though, so we opted to arrive fairly early in the day. We spent a lot of time in the water, with our masks and snorkels, observing the marine life.
Speaking of double beaches, although not as large, the one at Limni, near Liapades, also caught our eye! A thin sandbank cuts through the forest and rocks by the sea. We loved swimming there and watching the fish, sea urchins and starfish! Juliette even showed us a very impressive spot: an underwater cliff several dozen metres deep.
But the beach that offered us the most crystal-clear waters was Rovinia. Isolated, surrounded by pine and olive groves, the swimming (and relaxing!) was more than appreciated!
In short, we were enchanted by the island, its lush green landscapes, its beaches with turquoise waters, its olive groves, its little hilltop villages and its incomparably friendly locals.
We also took advantage of our stay on Corfu to discover the north of the island by bike.
