Embarking on the Tour du Mont-Blanc is much more than following a simple trail. It is entering an adventure where multiple paths are possible. Beyond the classic route, the TMB is dotted with "variants," alternative paths that significantly change the experience of a stage. More alpine, more demanding, more scenic, they are aimed at hikers who want to step off the main route for a closer encounter with high mountain terrain. As an agency specializing in treks in the Alps since 1983, we understand the importance of choosing the right itinerary. This article presents the main official TMB variants to help you understand their specificities and design a tour that truly suits you.

What is a variant on the TMB?
A variant is an alternative route to the classic path of a stage. It is generally more difficult, with greater elevation gain or more technical terrain (rocky passages, steep trails). Far from being simple shortcuts, variants are deliberate choices that allow discovering other landscapes, often wilder and more alpine. They require excellent physical condition, sure-footedness, and above all, great caution. Before embarking on one, it is essential to check weather conditions and the state of the trail (snow patches, etc.).
Col du Tricot variant: a spectacular start
This variant spices up the first stage between Les Houches and Les Contamines. Instead of following the Col de Voza, it offers a more aerial route. Crossing the Bionnassay Himalayan bridge and ascending the Col du Tricot (2120 m) provides direct and impressive views of the Bionnassay Glacier. It’s a challenging yet rewarding introduction, immediately setting the tone for a sporty trek.

Col des Fours variant: the TMB summit
On the second stage, after the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme, this variant climbs to the Col des Fours (2665 m), the highest point of the entire Tour du Mont-Blanc. The atmosphere is mineral, wild, and the 360° view over the Vanoise and the south face of Mont Blanc is breathtaking. The following descent is steep and technical in a rocky scree. This option is reserved for very experienced hikers and only in perfectly dry weather.

Fenêtre d'Arpette variant: the ultimate challenge
Considered the most difficult of all variants, the Fenêtre d'Arpette appears on the Swiss stage between Champex and the Col de la Forclaz. It is a formidable ascent in the Val d'Arpette, ending in a block corridor to reach the Fenêtre d'Arpette (2665 m). The reward is a plunging, unforgettable view over the Trient Glacier. This option should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers, not prone to vertigo, and in perfect weather conditions.

How to choose your variant: expert advice
Choosing to take a variant should never be done lightly. Here are three key points to consider:
- Your physical condition: Honestly assess your level and fatigue. A variant can turn a moderate stage into a very difficult day.
- Weather and trail conditions: This is the most important factor. Fog, rain, or storms make these routes dangerous. Early in the season, lingering snow patches may require specific equipment (ice axe, crampons). Always check with refuges or professionals. For guidance, see our article on when to do the TMB.
- Your desires: Are you looking for physical challenge, solitude, or the most spectacular panorama? Your motivation will guide your choice.
