To cross the Alps on foot is to experience one of Europe's great journeys. As specialists in Alps hiking tours with over 40 years of experience, Grand Angle has meticulously designed this route from Munich to Venice to immerse you in the evolving landscapes and cultures of Germany, Austria, and Italy. This trek offers a genuine traverse, linking three distinct alpine regions in a single, continuous journey.
Your adventure begins in the romantic foothills of Bavaria, amidst the fairytale castles of King Ludwig II, before gaining elevation in the Ammergau and Wetterstein massifs. This initial section is a classic introduction to hiking in the Bavarian Alps, blending rich history with impressive mountain scenery. The path then crosses into Austria, revealing the rugged limestone peaks of the Karwendel and the glaciated giants of the Hohe Tauern National Park. After a cultural stop in the vibrant city of Innsbruck, you'll tackle the main alpine ridge.
The crossing into Italy marks a dramatic shift as you enter the spectacular realm of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the trail winds beneath the iconic pale spires of peaks like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a highlight of any Dolomites hiking tour. The journey concludes with a striking contrast, descending from the mountains to the timeless canals and historic streets of Venice. This demanding guided journey from Munich to Venice is structured as a lodge-to-lodge trek, allowing for an authentic and immersive experience of this iconic alpine route.

Morning group meeting and orientation in Munich, the beautiful capital of Bavaria in Germany. The meeting will be at a hotel located near the main train station in the city center. This makes it logistically easy to reach the train station for our departure to Füssen, which is a 130km/80mi train ride (2.5 hours) from Munich, then a short bus (10 min) to Hohenschwangau. Today you arrive to the romantic fairytale world of King Louis II (King Ludwig) of Bavaria. Once arriving to the hotel, we’ll drop our bags off to be stored before heading to lunch. The hotel is located at the foot of 2 iconic Bavarian castles, Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau (former summer residence of the Bavarian royal family). The afternoon is set aside to visit the castles and take a first walk to the nearby lakes Schwansee, Alpsee and Hohenschwangau.
About 3 hours of walking, 6km/3.7mi, +160m/525ft, -160m/525ft. Daypack to carry.

After a scenic ride up (included), we’ll start an extraordinary hike through the Bavarian Ammergau massif. With a bit of luck, you might get to see groups of chamois among the incredible rocky landscapes. This wild mountain range will leave you speechless with its incredible ridge lines and limestone needles standing tall above the lush green forests below. We end our day hiking through a forest until we reach the Kenzenhütte where we can enjoy a drink. A private transfer (40 min, included) will take us back to our hotel.

CLOTHING CHECKLIST:
The following items are required for this trip unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed.
Important Note: Please, no cotton hiking/cycling clothes. Synthetic clothing is very efficient in drying quickly. Merino wool material clothing is also efficient in drying quickly, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing a bad odor after use.
GEAR CHECKLIST:
OPTIONAL ITEMS:
*FIRST AID KIT SUGGESTIONS:
After years of experience planning adventure travel around the world, we've learned that anything can happen, and every traveler should carry a basic personal first aid kit. We want to ensure our guests are well-prepared and make smart informed travel decisions. In many of the places we operate trips, it may be challenging to find certain medications and/or first aid supplies, and sometimes common items you desire may not be available in the destination you are travelling. That's why it's good to be prepared and carry a small supply of first aid supplies, any prescription medication, and/or over-the-counter medications you may require during your travels.
We recommend discussing your travel plans, vaccination requirements, and any medication usage with your primary healthcare provider before embarking on our trips. This helps ensure you have a safe and enjoyable travel experience.
During our “Guided” trips, our staff always have emergency equipment on hand to assist anyone in need, including our guests. This equipment includes communication devices and a comprehensive first aid kit with items we've found to be effective for the most common health issues we encounter.
Here is a basic list of what we think makes a good personal travel first aid kit:
PACKING FOR TRAVEL:
It is recommended that you prepare your items in the following manner for your travels to this trip.
“Carry-on Bag(s)” - This is the bag you will bring with you on the plane. We recommend all your pertinent information be in this bag (passport, travel documents, etc.) as well as your most important gear items (hiking footwear, jacket, prescription medication, etc.) in case any checked luggage items becomes lost or delayed.
“Checked Bag(s)” - This bag will be checked and contain the rest of your personal items (clothing and gear, etc.).
Important Note: Again, it is recommended to either wear or pack in your “Carry-on Bag” the main gear items you need for this trip vs. putting them in your checked “Travel Bag” (in case luggage is delayed). Hiking footwear is probably the hardest item to replace last minute if items become lost or delayed past the intended start date of the trip. Lost or delayed luggage has become increasingly common in major airports for international travel since the global pandemic.
LUGGAGE MANAGEMENT DURING TRIP:
During this trip, the packing system needs to be in 2 bags.
Extra Luggage - “Checked Bag(s)” & ”Carry-on Bag(s)”: This bag will contain all the items you want to bring along on the trip. It will be transferred by vehicle, and you will have access to it at the end of each day of activity (except day 7 & 8), but not throughout the day. Extra luggage is not easily stored due to the one-way logistics of this trip and therefore not allowed, beyond the 1 bag limit with a maximum weight of 20kg/44lbs.
- For your transported luggage: a backpack or a travel bag in good condition works best.
Day Backpack (not provided): All guests will need a backpack, which they will be responsible for carrying during trip activities. Items in this bag should include anything you may need throughout the day during the trip. (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.).

There are many quotations on the virtues of travel: openness and awareness of cultures, tolerance, knowledge of the world and its many treasures.
Our era has enabled the masses to explore the world with enthusiasm. But now we're faced with a dilemma: our travels are costing the planet in greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, waste and other unpleasant pollution!
Let's travel better!
While we're waiting to find THE right solution, we can look for a compromise to minimize our pollution while continuing to enjoy and learn from our travels. Our watchwords: adapt and mitigate.
There are many ways to travel more responsibly and sustainably, and we invite you to discover the actions Grand Angle has taken in this direction in our dedicated article.
The figures presented here are estimates, based on the Ademe calculator, but nonetheless give you a fairly accurate idea of the carbon footprint of your trip. Quantities are expressed in CO2 equivalents, so that you can compare the different greenhouse gases.
Grand Angle has long demonstrated its commitment through the trips we design and offer. Our commitment also materializes through the associations to which we belong:
► Acting for Responsible Tourism - ATR label
Grand Angle is an active member of the ATR association "Agir pour un Tourisme Responsable", whose compliance with the label has been certified by Ecocert Environnement.
The common values of the label, shared by all its members, are represented by: transparency (between the customer and the travel agency), partnership (between local service providers and the travel agency) and consistency (synonymous with good communication within the travel agency team).
Being a member of ATR commits us to:
• Promoting quality tourism
• Respect for the environment, heritage and local people
• Educating travelers about local customs
• Inform travellers in full transparency about their travel conditions

► The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas
In 2014, Grand Angle was one of the first tour operators to be certified under the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, created and developed by Europarc, the Federation of European Protected Areas, which includes Regional Natural Parks, National Parks and Nature Reserves.
The purpose of the European Charter is to develop quality, sustainable and responsible tourism in protected areas, with respect for people and their environment. Being certified under the CETD is a recognition of our commitment to sustainable tourism and development rooted in the territories, economically, socially and environmentally.
The certification is proof of the confidence that the Parks have in our company and its approach.
Grand Angle's partner in this certification is the Vercors Regional Natural Park, our homeland: http://parc-du-vercors.fr
