🌍 The carbon footprint of your trip – How is it calculated?

At Grand Angle, we are committed to making travel more responsible. That’s why we have developed a carbon footprint calculation tool for our trips.

This carbon footprint represents the greenhouse gas emissions generated during your trip, expressed in kg of CO₂ equivalent per person (kg CO₂e).

Explore our vision of sustainable tourism and discover how we travel differently — with respect and conviction.

🧭 What is included?

We calculate emissions across four main categories:

Category Examples
🏨 Accommodation Hotel stays, guesthouses or mountain huts, depending on their energy consumption
🍽️ Meals Food consumed on site, taking typical diets into account
🚐 Local transport Organised transfers (minibus, shuttles, trains, etc.)
🎒 Luggage transport Transfer of your luggage between stages

✈️ For island or long-haul destinations, return flight emissions are also included.

🔍 How are these emissions calculated?

  • 📊 Specialised databases: KlimaLink (accommodation), Greentripper, ADEME, Climatiq
  • 🗺️ Exact distances: calculated using mapping tools
  • 🚐 Local information: type of vehicle, fuel, occupancy rate, etc.

All data is then consolidated into a reliable tool, with results presented in a clear and standardised way.

📌 Why calculate this?

By informing you about the carbon impact of your trip, we help you:

  • Understand your emissions
  • Compare different types of trips
  • Make more responsible travel choices

⚠️ What about travel to the departure point?

As each traveller independently organises their transport to the starting point, we do not include these emissions.
❗ Except for trips requiring a flight (for example, to islands or outside Europe): in this case, flight emissions are included.

To estimate the carbon footprint of your journey, you can use the ADEME calculator:

✅ A clear and honest approach

We follow the European Green Claims Directive, which prohibits vague or misleading claims.
No unjustified “eco” or “carbon neutral” labels — only precise and transparent data.

📊 Putting things into perspective

To better understand the impact of a trip, it helps to compare: the average carbon footprint of a person living in France in daily life is around 150 kg CO₂e per week.
Our trips, designed around walking and cycling, often have a carbon footprint equivalent to or lower than this average (excluding travel to the destination).

For example:

👉 It is therefore mainly the mode of transport used to reach the departure point that determines the overall carbon footprint of the trip.
Choosing the train or carpooling is already a major step towards more responsible tourism.
